![]() This information helps people search sites discover full names and family connections. Birth, marriage, divorce, and death records are available for request. The most common sources for your personal information are government records. You may opt out of these websites, but their existence points to a troubling question: Where is all this data coming from? The Department of Motor Vehicles may also be selling your personal information. These sites collected this information automatically without your permission. These sites have information on familial associations, social networks, work history, and much more. It closely resembles people search sites like Spokeo, Instant Checkmate, and PeopleFinders, except that those sites charge monthly fees of $5 to $35 to show full records. Answers to common security questions like “What is your mother’s maiden name?” and “What street did you grow up on?” are easily inferred.įamilyTreeNow is not the first website to expose this sort of data, but it is likely the first to do this for no cost to users. However, in addition to providing a current address to target with pizzas, SWAT teams, and in-person visits, they can also be used by a hacker to retrieve account passwords. These details might be considered trivial by most. In an age when everyone is at risk of being targeted by online mobs, cyberstalking, and identity thieves, this information being in one place is terrifying for anyone concerned for their safety and the safety of close friends and family. Associates generally include roommates, significant others, landlords, and tenants. Searching for my name and birthdate yielded the following information: my full name, my address history for the last decade, and presumed relatives and associates. ![]() As young adult fiction author Anna Brittain wrote, the site is an internet safety hazard. Despite its trappings as a genealogy site, it is in fact a "people search engine" best-suited for stalkers, blackmailers, and hackers. Birth records, marriage records, newspaper clippings none of these are present on this site. Genealogy sites will provide old records that have been scanned in so that you may find relatives. Lastly, the account sign-up page says, “Seriously everything is free, no catch.” But the entire website is the catch. It claims to have “one of the largest collections of genealogy records anywhere.” Some old-timey photos adorning the site give the impression that it can help you discover family from long ago. The website FamilyTreeNow presents itself as an alternative to genealogy websites such as Ancestry and FamilySearch.

Why make this After Eight ice cream recipe?. ![]() I found a great intro to XGen course from Jesus FC, which got me up and running with guides/splines XGen workflow. Of course, since 2011, the internal Disney Animation version of XGen has developed along its own path and gained capabilities and features beyond Autodesk’s version of XGen, but the basics are still similar enough that I figured I wouldn’t have too difficult of a time adapting. XGen’s origins as a Disney Animation technology explain why XGen’s authoring workflow uses Ptex for expressions. XGen was originally developed at Disney Animation and is used extensively on Disney Animation feature films Autodesk licensed XGen from Disney Animation and incorporated XGen into Maya’s standard feature set in 2011. I chose to use XGen in part because it’s built into Maya, and also because I already have some familiarity with XGen thanks to my day job at Disney Animation. To make the hair in this project, I chose to use Maya’s XGen plugin, which is a generator for arbitrary primitives, including but not limited to curves for things like hair and fur. The last time I did anything with making CG hair was about a decade ago, and I did a terrible job back then, so I wanted to figure out how to make passable CG hair first because I saw the hair as basically a make-or-break problem for this entire project. ![]() With this plan in mind, the first problem I tackled was creating a completely new hairstyle for the character. The major changes I wanted to make to take the rig away from its default look were to add glasses, completely redo the hair, simplify the outfit, and shade the outfit completely differently from its default appearance. I figured that most of the other entries into the challenge were going to use the provided character in more or less its default configuration and look, so I decided that I’d try to take the rig further away from its default look and instead use the rig as a basis for a bit of a different character. I’ve gotten a lot busier recently with personal life stuff, so I knew I wasn’t going to have as much time to spend on this challenge, which meant I needed to come up with a relatively straightforward simple concept and carefully choose what aspects of the challenge I was going to focus on. One of the first things I discovered was that I had to scale down the rig’s mouth and teeth a bit just to bring things back into more normal proportions.Īfter playing with the rig for a few evenings, I started thinking about what I should make if I did enter the challenge after all. ![]() The model itself has a head that’s proportionally a bit on the large side, and the mouth is especially large, which is part of why the facial rig gets so creepy so fast. I think part of the problem is just the overall character design the rig is based on a young Natalie Portman’s character from the movie Léon: The Professional, and the character in that movie is… something of an unusual character, to say the least. I discovered really quickly that the Mathilda rig is reasonably flexible, but the flexibility meant that the rig can go off model really fast, and also the face can get really creepy really fast. I originally wasn’t planning on entering this challenge, but I downloaded the base assets anyway because I was curious about playing with the rigged character a bit. Unlike in previous challenges though, this time around Pixar also provided a rigged character in the form of the popular open-source Mathilda Rig, to be incorporated into the final entry somehow.Īlthough my day job involves rendering characters all of the time, I have really limited experience with working with characters in my personal projects, so I got to try some new stuff!Ĭonsidering that I my time spent on this project was far more limited than on previous RenderMan Art Challenges, and considering that I didn’t really know what I was doing with the character aspect, I’m pretty happy that my final entry won third place in the contest! This RenderMan Art Challenge followed the same format as usual: Pixar supplied some base models without any uvs, texturing, shading, lighting, etc, and participants had to start with the supplied base models and come up with a single final image. ![]() I wasn’t initially planning on participating this time around due to not having as much free time on my hands, but after taking a look at the provided assets for this challenge, I figured that it looked fun and that I could learn some new things, so why not?Īdmittedly participating in this challenge is why some technical content I had planned for this blog in the fall wound up being delayed, but in exchange, here’s another writeup of some fun CG art things I learned along the way! On my most recent playthrough, I've been exploring Torchlight 2 alongside SynergiesMOD, a total conversion that makes quite a difference to the way that the action RPG unfolds.Īt first, though, I had a hard time pinning down exactly what had changed. Or rather, something funny had been installed. Torchlight 2's a generous game, of course, but something funny was up. Shoulders, hats, trousers and various wonderfully nasty weapons potions, spells, piles of glittering gold. More loot than I'd ever seen in Torchlight 2 before: full knee-buckling inventories of the stuff. Mordrox had been hammered into oblivion, his skeleton guards were blasted into powdery white gravel, and, looking about, I noticed the floor was knee-high with loot. It made more of an impact on my latest playthrough, mind, and that's because of the aftermath of that final battle. Meet a shady character near Skull Hollow, chat for a bit, and then head deep inside the catacombs of the Bone Gallery to fight Mordrox, a giant zombie troll. ![]() It's a side-quest tucked snugly into the game's first act, and it's typically pulpy stuff. ![]() I didn't really notice Bring Out Your Dead on my first few playthroughs of Torchlight 2. DisplayLink uses an installed driver and the system CPU and GPU to convert graphics data on the system into data packets. The second and third displays will rely on the DisplayLink software. This requires no user driver installation. The HDMI or DisplayPort output uses Alternate Mode (Alt Mode), and as it is basically a pipeline directly to the system’s native GPU, it will behave just like if you hooked up a USB-C to HDMI dongle to your laptop. This entails making some adjustments in the Mac’s “Privacy” tab, but you are walked through it step by step. The most scary bit is when you need to enable “Screen Recording” to allow the DisplayLink Manager app to capture pixels and send them to your USB peripheral. Older versions did not support laptops’ closed-display/Clamshell mode, but 1.8.1 does support Clamshell mode if the MacBook is Intel-based running macOS 12 or if the MacBook is M1-based running macOS 11 or later. Apple states in the M1, M2 or M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro tech specs that they support only “one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz”. ![]() Apple’s M1, M2 or M3 chips simply won’t allow it-at least natively. Installing third-party software drivers leads to a slight risk that these might later be unsupported by future updates of the macOS, but the two drivers we recommend are recognized industry standards that we think will continue to be supported.
